IEC updates lighting product standards

On November 6, 2024, IEC released a new version of the lighting standard IEC 60598-1:2024, which is based on the 2020 version and mainly includes the following major changes:
(a) The layout structure of the lighting fixtures has been significantly modified, with corresponding symbols placed directly below the corresponding clauses for easier reading. Please refer to Appendix V for a comparison of the old and new versions of the standard clauses;
(b) Add Appendix V for comparison of new and old standard clauses;
(c) Revised clause 7.32 regarding the relevant requirements for SPD and SPC;
(d) Revised the definitions of the terms live part and active part;
(e) Revised the mechanical stress requirements for conductors in clause 7.14.2;
(f) Modified the relevant requirements of condition 4 in clause 14.5.2 for abnormal heat testing;
(g) The term 'permanently' in clause 9.2.1 of the grounding requirements has been removed;
(h) Modified the testing time for grounding continuity in Appendix N;
(i) Modified the magnetic suction installation requirements in 7.11.4, 7.14.1, and Table 22 (Article 14.4.3);
(j) Add relevant requirements for the inclusion of batteries in Appendix W lighting fixtures;
(k) Revised the marking requirements for power polarity in clause 6;
(l) Add Sub Clause 7.31.5: Supplementary Requirements for the Use of SELV Powered Luminaires;
(m) Revised clause 6.4.17: Detailed requirements for lamps with protective conductor current greater than 10mA;
(n) Modified clauses 6.3.24, 6.4.18, 6.4.24, 7.30, 10.2.1: requirements for maintainable, non user maintainable, and non maintainable components;
(o) Modified the requirements for windproof covers in Appendix D;
(p) Revised the issue of inconsistent voltage range limits in clauses 8.2.1 and 13.2.1;
(q) Revised clause 9.2.10 on loop installation requirements;
(r) Revised clauses 2 and 7.8, updated the IEC 61058 series standards for lamps containing switches, and updated the switch limit temperature in Table 21;
(s) Revised the requirements for photobiosafety in Article 6.3.22 and Article 7.24, and introduced a new photobiosafety assessment standard IEC 62471-7;
(t) Add a new subclause 6.3.27, which states that if the socket of a lighting fixture claims a rated current less than the maximum current of the socket itself, the declared rated current value should be marked near the socket.
