In October 2022, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) officially released the latest standard for sunglasses, EN ISO 12312-1:2022, which has been updated to the 2022 version and will replace the old version EN ISO 12312-1:2013/A1:2015.
Standard implementation date: January 31, 2023
Regulatory requirements and precautions: Currently, the harmonized standard for sunglasses in the EU PPE regulation (EU 2016/425) is still the old version EN ISO 12312-1:2013/A1:2015. When will the harmonized standard for sunglasses adopt the new version (i.e. EN ISO 12312-1:2022 has not yet been officially adopted by EU regulations)? The EU has not provided a specific timetable at present.
Compared to the old version of the standard, the main changes in the new version of the standard are as follows:
● Requirements for adding electrochromic lenses;
Replace the examination method for local refractive power changes with the examination method of observing regular grid images through lenses (ISO 18526-1:2020, clause 6.3);
Introduced activation of photochromic lenses at 5 ° C and 35 ° C as optional information;
Extend side protection to four types of children's sunglasses;
Introduce seven headforms according to ISO 18526-4:2020, three Type 1 and three Type 2, plus one child headform. Each type has three sizes - small, medium, and large. For sunglasses, the use of these test head models typically involves different interpupillary distances. For example, the interpupillary distance of type 1 is 60, 64, and 68 millimeters;
Update the uniformity requirements for visible light transmittance within a single area, reduce the measurement area to a diameter of 30mm, and increase the limit to 15% (the 20% limit for Class 4 filters remains unchanged).
The new version of the sunglasses standard EN ISO 12312-1:2022 will have a certain impact on the test results due to changes in the requirements for the head mold parameters and testing items.
